Purple French Tip Nails: Shades, Designs and How-To Tips

Purple French tip nails explained: how to pick a lavender, lilac, violet or plum shade, which base to use under it, easy designs, and how to paint a clean purple tip in gel, lacquer or dip.

Purple French tip nails are a French manicure with the tip painted purple instead of white. You keep the sheer pink or nude base and the curved smile line, and swap the white for lavender, lilac, violet, grape or plum. It gives a French manicure color without covering the whole nail, and it works on short natural nails as well as long almond or stiletto extensions. This guide covers which purple to pick, what base to put under it, easy designs, and how to paint a clean purple tip in gel polish, lacquer or dip powder.

What are purple French tip nails?

Short square nails with lilac and white tips over a sheer base on a blue background

A purple French tip uses the same three parts as a classic French manicure: a sheer or nude base over the nail bed, a band of color on the free edge (the part of the nail past the fingertip), and a smile line where the two meet. The only thing that changes is the color of the tip.

That one change does a lot. A pale lavender tip on a short square nail looks quiet and clean. A deep plum tip on a long almond nail looks dressy. A bright violet tip with a white base looks bold and graphic. Because the base stays sheer, the design still reads as a French manicure, so it suits clients who want color without a full set of solid purple nails.

Choosing the right purple for the tip

"Purple" covers a wide range, from pastel lilac to near-black plum. Pick the shade first, then choose the base to go under it. Here is how the main families behave as a French tip, with shades from our OPI gel and DND duo ranges that fit each group.

Lavender and lilac tips

Light purple is the softest version of a purple French tip. It stays quiet on short nails and works as an everyday design. Plan on two thin coats on the tip rather than one thick one, check coverage after the first coat, and keep the smile line crisp, because a soft color with a fuzzy edge looks unfinished.

Lavender shades to reach for include OPI GelColor Lucky Lucky Lavender, which OPI describes as one of its iconic lavender shades, OPI Do You Lilac It? in lacquer, which the brand calls a chic light purple with cool undertones, and DND Duo Gel 874 Loss Lavender and 597 Lavender Dream, which each come as a set with a gel polish and a lacquer. For dip, iGel Joyful Lilac sits in the same light range.

Mid-tone purples give the most contrast against a sheer base without looking heavy. Check coverage after the first coat and add a second thin coat if needed. This is the range to use when a client wants the French tip to be noticed.

Good violet and grape options are OPI GelColor I Can Buy Myself Violets, described by OPI as a violet crème, OPI GelColor Vogue en Violet, OPI GelColor Grape Escape, and from DND, Duo Gel 763 Ulta Violet. For dip, see the shades in the dip powder section below or browse the full dip powder range.

Dark purple and plum tips

Dark purple French tips read almost like a black French from a distance, but warmer and softer up close. They sit well on a nude or milky base, where the contrast is softer than over bright pink, and they need a thinner tip than a pastel, because a wide band of dark color makes the nail look shorter. Keep the tip to about the width of the free edge on short nails.

For a deep purple, OPI GelColor Lincoln Park After Dark is the one to reach for; OPI describes it as a near-black purple.

Shimmer and pearl purple tips

A shimmer purple on the tip adds light without adding nail art. OPI GelColor Pompeii Purple is a pink-purple that OPI describes as pearlescent, and it makes a soft, glowing tip over a sheer base.

Picking the base under a purple tip

The base is half of the design. The same purple tip looks completely different over sheer pink, over milky white and over bare nail.

  • Sheer pink base. The classic choice. It warms the nail bed and makes a lavender or violet tip look clean and intentional. OPI GelColor Passion, which OPI describes as a sheer neutral nude made for layering, and DND DC 059 Sheer Pink both work here.
  • Nude or beige base. Better under dark purple and plum tips, because the contrast is softer and the nail does not look split in two.
  • Milky white base. Gives a cooler look than sheer pink. Keep the milky coat thin so the tip still has an edge to sit against.
  • Bare nail with clear base. The fastest option and a good one for short natural nails. Use a clear gel base and top coat and let the natural nail show.

Whatever base you choose, apply it in two thin coats. A thick sheer coat pools at the cuticle and streaks, and the tip will never look clean on top of it.

Purple French tip nail designs

Once you can paint a plain purple tip, these variations are small changes to the same technique. Most of them use supplies from our nail art range.

Classic lavender French tips

A soft lavender tip over sheer pink, with a glossy top coat. This is the version to offer first. It works on every length, it is quick to do, and it is the easiest to keep consistent across all ten nails. On longer almond nails, let the tip follow the curve of the free edge so the lavender band looks like part of the nail, not a stripe painted across it.

Purple ombre French tips

Instead of a hard smile line, the purple fades up from the free edge into the sheer base. Sponge the purple onto the tip in two or three light layers, cure or dry between layers, and keep the fade in the bottom third of the nail so it still reads as a French tip rather than a full ombre. Our ombre guide covers the sponge and brush-blend methods in detail.

Glitter purple French tips

A glitter tip has a textured edge rather than a hard line, so small wobbles in the smile line are less visible. Paint the tip in a sheer purple or clear gel first, pat glitter onto the wet layer, cure, then seal with two coats of top coat so the surface is smooth. Keep the glitter to the tip only; a stray flake in the base is hard to remove once it is cured.

Purple French tips with flowers

A small purple flower on one or two nails turns a plain French, with a white or purple tip, into a spring or wedding set. Paint the tips first, cure, then add the flowers with a fine liner brush and a purple gel art liner over the base, near the smile line, so they look connected to the tip. Keep the flowers on two nails per hand at most; more than that competes with the tip.

Angled and geometric purple tips

Stiletto nails with angled purple and white geometric tips

Run the purple diagonally across the tip, or split the tip into a purple half and a white half. An angled tip is a straight line, so you can check it against the sidewall as you paint, which suits stiletto and coffin shapes. Use the same angle on every nail of one hand, then mirror it on the other hand.

Purple tips with an accent nail

Paint eight nails with a plain purple tip, then give the ring finger on each hand a full lavender color, a white glitter, or a single rhinestone at the cuticle. The accent nail should use a color already in the set so the hand still looks like one design.

Double French: purple and white

Two thin lines at the tip, one white at the very edge and one purple just behind it. Paint the white first, cure it fully, then add the purple line so the colors do not bleed. OPI GelColor Alpine Snow, which OPI describes as a white that works as a base or on the tips, is a good white for the outer line. This design needs a steady hand and a liner brush, so quote it as nail art rather than a basic French.

How to do purple French tips in gel, step by step

Gel is the easiest system for purple French tips because you can take your time on the smile line and fix mistakes before you cure. Follow the manufacturer's timing and instructions for every cure.

  1. Prep the nail. Shape the free edge, buff the shine off the plate, push back the cuticle and cleanse. Apply a thin gel base coat and cure.
  2. Paint the base color. Two thin coats of sheer pink, nude or milky white, curing after each coat. Thin coats matter more here than anywhere else, because any pooling at the cuticle will show through.
  3. Paint the purple tip. Use a flat French brush from our French brush range, or a gel art liner with a built-in thin brush. Start at one sidewall, sweep to the center of the free edge, then repeat from the other sidewall so the two strokes meet in the middle. Add a second thin coat if the first one looks uneven.
  4. Check, clean up, then cure. Work one or two nails at a time, or flash-cure each tip, so the gel does not spread while you paint the next nail. Before the full cure, hold the hand up and compare the depth and curve of the new tip with the nails already done. Clean up a wobble with a clean brush dipped in cleanser, then cure.
  5. Top coat. One full coat of gel top coat, sealed over the free edge, then cure. Wipe the inhibition layer if your top coat needs it.

DND Gel Art Liner Classic Purple 25 bottle

A gel art liner saves a step on thin French tips because the brush is already the right size. DND Gel Art Liner Classic Purple 25 is a plummy purple that DND describes as a full-coverage gel paint with a built-in thin brush for French tips and detailed nail art, and Classic Pastel Purple 12 is the lilac version of the same liner. Use either with a gel base and top coat.

Purple French tips in lacquer and dip powder

Lacquer. Regular polish works for purple French tips, but there is no cure button to stop a wobble, so work faster and use striping tape or a French tip guide if your hand is not steady. Paint the base, let it dry fully, lay the guide, paint the tip in one or two thin coats, remove the guide while the polish is still slightly wet, and top coat once the tip is dry to the touch. OPI Nail Polish Vogue en Violet and the lacquer side of any DND duo will do the tip; browse OPI lacquer for the full color range.

Dip powder. A French dip tip is done by dipping only the free edge. Apply base to the whole nail and dip in a sheer or clear powder, then apply base to the tip only and dip the tip into the purple powder at the angle of the smile line, or hold a French tip guide against the nail while you pour the powder over the edge. Brush off the excess, then finish with the brand's clear dip layer, activator, filing and second activator before the top coat, following the manufacturer's sequence, and file the smile line clean during the filing step. Purple dip shades include OPI Powder Perfection Purple Palazzo Pants, DND Dip 659 Majestic Violet and iGel Dip Joyful Lilac, and a white such as OPI Powder Perfection Alpine Snow handles a double French in dip.

Getting a clean smile line every time

  • Match the curve to the free edge. The smile line should mirror the natural curve of the nail. A deep curve on a flat free edge looks drawn on.
  • Keep the depth proportional. On short nails, the tip should be about the width of the free edge. On long nails, no more than a third of the visible nail. Deep purple tips make the nail look shorter, so go thinner with darker shades.
  • Thin coats on the tip. A thick coat of purple leaves a ridge at the smile line that you can feel through the top coat. Two thin coats always look cleaner than one heavy one.
  • Clean the sidewalls. Purple on the skin at the sidewall is very visible. Run a clean brush along the sidewalls before curing.

Frequently asked questions

What base color goes with purple French tips?

Sheer pink is the safest base for lavender, lilac and violet tips. Nude or beige works better under dark purple and plum, and milky white gives a cooler, more modern look under any purple. Bare nail with a clear base is fine for short natural nails.

Do purple French tips work on short nails?

Yes. Keep the tip thin, about the width of the free edge, and choose a lighter purple. A lavender or lilac micro French on short square or round nails is one of the easiest versions to wear and to keep looking neat.

Which purple is easiest to paint as a French tip?

A mid-tone violet or grape crème, because the edge is easy to see against a sheer base while you paint. Very light and very dark purples show every wobble in the smile line, so they take more care.

Can you do purple French tips with dip powder?

Yes. Dip the whole nail in a sheer or clear powder first, then apply base to the tip only and dip or pour the purple powder over the free edge. A French tip guide helps keep the smile line even. Finish with the clear dip layer, activator, filing and second activator in the order the manufacturer lists, and file the smile line clean during the filing step.

How do you stop a lavender tip from looking streaky?

Use two thin coats on the tip instead of one thick coat, and make sure the base color is fully cured and smooth before you paint the tip. If the lavender still looks patchy, pick a slightly more opaque shade for the tip and save the sheerest pastels for full-nail color.
